Java 1.4

Global Conflict now runs on version 1.4 of the Java 2 Runtime Environment. If you are not currently running version 1.4 of the Java plug-in, you will be prompted to install it when you start the game's applet.

Linux and Solaris users may need to install version 1.4 of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) prior to starting the applet. The JRE can be downloaded from Sun.

Custom Games

Players may now create custom games. These games are intended to be played just for fun, or to try out different rule parameters, or to play against specific players. The results of custom games do not affect scores. More information can be found in the Custom Games section of the Basic Rules.

Discussion Forum

The discussion forum has been replaced:

  • Anyone may read messages. However, only registered players may enter new messages. Your account name and password are the same as in the game.

  • Messages are grouped into Discussion Threads. When you enter a new message, you create a new thread. When you reply to a message, you add to the existing thread. The main page in the Forum lists the various threads, the number of messages in each, and the date that the most recent message was entered. Message threads are sorted by date; the threads with the most recent activity are displayed first.

  • Message threads that have had no activity in the last 90 days are automatically deleted.

Other Enhancements

  • The scoring has been changed. You still lose 1 point when you lose a game. However, when you win a game, you receive a number of points equal to the number of players. For example, if you win a game that had 9 players, you will receive 9 points. Results of custom games do not affect the scoring.

  • When you view information about a country (by double-clicking on the country), you can see the country's weather zone.

  • The number of resources in a few countries has been changed in order to improve game balance. One resource has been added to each of Peru, S.E. Australia, and Borneo. One resource has been removed from each of France and Romania.

  • You can now view any continent, even if you do not own any countries on that continent.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that caused you to lose two points if you resigned from a game and then nuclear winter occurred.

  • Fixed several bugs related to the auto-pilot. The auto-pilot should be more useful now.

  • All the players are now displayed when you press the "Rankings" button.
